Naomi Osaka Showcases Family Support During Wimbledon Quarterfinals

2026-07-08 · Naomi Osaka · Player Focus

**Naomi Osaka** reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals on 5 July 2026, becoming the deepest‑run Japanese player in the tournament’s history while her parents, Tamaki Osaka and Leonard François, watched from the player’s box.

Tamaki Osaka, born in Nemuro, Hokkaido, moved to New York after marrying Haitian‑born Leonard François. In 2023 she told *InStyle* she worked overtime in import‑export, sometimes sleeping in her car, to fund Naomi’s early training. Naomi recalls her mother’s relentless grind, noting that the sacrifices left Tamaki wondering about her own interests.

Leonard, a native of Jacmel, Haiti, introduced his daughters to tennis after being inspired by Richard Williams. He briefly coached Naomi and later said the “blueprint was already there.” In an Instagram post earlier this summer, Naomi shared a conversation where Leonard, at 59, reflected on life’s brevity and likened it to the arc of a tennis career.

Mari Osaka, Naomi’s older sister, retired from professional tennis in 2021 and now works in art and design. She co‑designed Naomi’s Met Gala outfit with Nicolas Ghesquière, a project she described to *Vogue* as a celebration of their biracial heritage and the American Dream.

In July 2023 Naomi welcomed daughter Shai with rapper Cordae. While Shai is still a toddler, Naomi has spoken about balancing motherhood with the demands of the tour, noting that her family’s support makes the juggling act possible.

The Osaka family’s presence in the player’s box adds emotional fuel. Naomi has said the sight of her parents cheering reminds her of the long road from Long Island to Centre Court. Their stories of hardship, coaching, and artistic collaboration weave into her narrative, giving her a deeper sense of purpose as she chases a first Wimbledon title.

Having secured a spot in the quarterfinals, Naomi will face the next opponent on 7 July 2026. Her focus remains on translating the family’s sacrifices into on‑court performance, aiming to add a Wimbledon crown to her Grand Slam collection.
