Naoya Inoue Faces Nonito Donaire in June 7 Bantamweight Title Rematch

2026-07-13 · Naoya Inoue · Match Report

Naoya Inoue will defend his WBA and IBF bantamweight titles against Nonito Donaire in a highly anticipated rematch on June 7 at Saitama Super Arena in Japan. The bout, announced Wednesday, marks the second meeting between the two boxing legends since their 2019 Fight of the Year thriller.

Inoue (24-0, 21 KOs) earned a unanimous decision victory over Donaire (42-7, 27 KOs) in their initial 2019 encounter, a fight widely praised for its intensity and skill. Since then, the Japanese star has recorded three consecutive knockout wins-over Jason Moloney (October 2021), Michael Dasmarinas (June 2022), and Aran Dipaen (December 2023)-while Donaire reclaimed the WBC title by defeating Nordine Oubaali in May 2022 and retained it against Reymart Gaballo in December 2022.

The rematch offers Inoue a chance to solidify his legacy as one of boxing’s premier pound-for-pound fighters. At 30 years old, he remains undefeated and holds two of the four major bantamweight belts. A win would extend his dominance and potentially set up a unification bout with WBO champion Kazuto Ioka. Donaire, 41, seeks to prove he can still compete at the highest level after losing to Inoue and enduring a 16-month layoff following his 2022 title defense.

The June 7 event will be Inoue’s first fight since December 2023, where he stopped Dipaen in eight rounds. Donaire hasn’t competed since his December 2022 victory over Gaballo. Both fighters will aim to make a statement in front of Inoue’s home crowd in Saitama, with the winner likely positioning themselves for a marquee matchup later in 2024. Promoters have hinted at potential unification talks depending on the outcome.
