Noah Lyles Accelerates Season with Free‑Running Approach

2026-07-01 · Noah Lyles · Player Focus

Noah Lyles sprinted 9.80 seconds in Rome on 23 May 2024 and set a 14.67‑second mark in the 150 m at Ostrava on 31 May, embracing a season without Olympic or World Championship pressure.

The 28‑year‑old eight‑time world champion said the lack of a major championship timetable lets him "run as fast as possible" without worrying about peaking for a specific meet. He returned to Paris for the Diamond League at Charlety Stadium, but the meet faced possible cancellation due to an extreme heat warning from Paris police. Training sessions that week included fellow American Jordan Anthony and Trinidadian Jereem Richards, all under coach Lance Brauman, before heat forced a cut‑short workout.

Lyles explained that a normal season would force him to prioritize high‑profile meets that fit a championship preparation schedule. This year, he can pick events he enjoys, such as the rarely run 150 m hybrid distance where he faced Australian sprinter Gout Gout in the Czech Republic. "I never could have done that in a normal season," he noted, highlighting the creative leeway he now has.

Beyond the track, Lyles is diving into fashion, manga and rap music. In July he plans to attend a major geek‑culture convention in the United States, then head to a FIFA World Cup semifinal. September will see him in Budapest for the inaugural Ultimate Championship, where he will help design athlete entrance shows and medal ceremonies. He sees these projects as steps toward modernising athletics, blending sport with entertainment.

Lyles will not race again until the US Championships in late July, keeping his summer schedule flexible. He eyes the 2025 World Championships in Beijing as a chance to chase a fifth straight 200 m title and edge past Jamaican legend Usain Bolt. Looking further ahead, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics on home soil could be his final Olympic appearance at peak form.

The season’s early results-9.80 s in Rome and 14.67 s in Ostrava-show Lyles still delivering elite speed while experimenting with a more relaxed approach. His blend of on‑track excellence and off‑track ventures may set a new template for athletes seeking both performance and personal expression.
