Noah Lyles leads star-studded field in new Ultimate Championships

Noah Lyles will headline the first World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest from September 11-13, 2026. The Olympic and world 100-meter champion is among the elite athletes set to compete in the new event designed to modernize track and field for television audiences.

The Ultimate Championships will feature a condensed, three-hour night session format across three days. Only Olympic and world champions qualify automatically, with most other spots determined by Diamond League final results and World Athletics rankings. Organizers can also invite one athlete per event who wouldn't otherwise qualify.

Noah Lyles and fellow U.S. sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden promoted the event on NBC's 'Today,' calling it a fresh approach to showcase the fastest athletes regardless of nationality. 'We've had many championships, but this gives it a different feel,' Jefferson-Wooden said.
