Oisin Murphy storms to five Windsor winners at 2,558-1 odds

Oisin Murphy rode five winners at Windsor on Monday at combined odds of 2,558-1, adding another chapter to his reign as the Thames-side track’s top jockey.

What happened?

Murphy opened his account in the opening five-furlong contest on David Evans’ Undercover (85/40). He then won Division One of the Ambrose Loves Reggae Novice Stakes aboard 11/2 shot Ferrystream, trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam. Murphy also landed Division 2 with George Boughey’s Real Bullet (8/1), who was making his track debut.

Rod Millman’s Bold Impact (3/1) won the Find Us At fitzdares.com Handicap before Murphy completed another outstanding day’s work on A Major Payne (5/2), trained by Michael Bell. This was the five-year-old’s second win in 20 starts, with Murphy aboard on both occasions.

Why it matters for Oisin Murphy

The five-timer lifts Murphy’s Windsor tally to 132 winners, extending his lead over Clive Cox, whose Visually is also entered for next Monday’s qualifier. Murphy’s haul also underlines his status as the reigning champion jockey at the Berkshire track, where he continues to dominate the weighing room.

But Murphy was far from satisfied. He finished second on Amazonian Dream in the Fitzdares Sprint Series Handicap qualifier after being denied a clear run and then hampered just over a furlong out. The seven-year-old gets another shot in next Monday’s qualifier, with trainer Rod Millman entering him straight after the setback.

What comes next?

Murphy has another strong booking of rides next Monday as he looks to follow up this week’s five-timer. Among the possible runners is Tony Carroll’s Lequinto, one of Marco Ghiani’s four Windsor winners a week earlier. Carroll is by far the most successful trainer at Windsor this season, with 10 winners, six more than Cox.

The card also features Stuart Williams-trained Buccabay, who won at Windsor in May last year with Ghiani in the saddle. Murphy finished half a length behind on William Knight’s Regal Envoy in that race, adding another layer to his rivalry with the track’s top trainers.
