Oisin Murphy targets hometown win at Killarney on Tuesday

2026-07-14 · Oisin Murphy · Player Focus

Oisin Murphy, the five-time British Flat champion jockey, returns to his hometown track at Killarney on Tuesday with high hopes of securing a win in his debut appearance there. The star rider, who described the moment as 'a lifetime dream,' will partner Celtic Motif in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden and Elusive Duke in the Killarney Plaza Hotel & Spa Handicap.

Murphy’s strongest contender is Celtic Motif, a filly trained by Joseph O’Brien who recently returned from a spell in America. The horse is expected to be tough to beat in the opening race. If Celtic Motif falters, Elusive Duke, a consistent performer trained by Mark Molloy, could step up. The gelding has finished second in his last two races and may finally break through with Murphy aboard.

This marks Murphy’s first ride at Killarney, a track close to his heart. The jockey, who has won five British Flat titles, has long dreamed of racing at his hometown venue. A victory here would add a personal milestone to his already impressive career.

In the Rose Hotel Handicap, Murphy rides Satono Chevalier, an eight-year-old trained by Michael Flannery. The horse has won twice this season and will face stiff competition from Ted Walsh’s Gaoth Chuil. Meanwhile, Cause I Like You, trained by Michael Mulvany, is tipped to win the Irish Examiner Handicap after a strong second-place finish earlier this month.

Murphy’s presence at Killarney highlights his versatility and ambition. After dominating British Flat racing, he now seeks success in Ireland, where he has deep roots. His performance on Tuesday could set the tone for future appearances at home tracks.
