European club makes move for Ollie Watkins as Aston Villa exit route opens

Ollie Watkins is set for a potential transfer away from Aston Villa after a European club stepped up with a concrete offer.

European giants Bayer Leverkusen are understood to be ready to table a formal bid for the 27-year-old England international.

What happened?

Aston Villa have now confirmed they will allow Watkins to leave this summer after months of uncertainty over his future. Leverkusen’s interest marks the first serious move for the striker since Villa ended their interest in signing replacements.

The news comes just days after Unai Emery, the Aston Villa manager, admitted the club must sell to balance the books. Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, confirmed his side is monitoring the situation closely.

Why it matters for Ollie Watkins

Watkins has scored 24 goals in all competitions this season, making him Villa’s top scorer for a second straight campaign. His form has kept him in Gareth Southgate’s England squad despite stiff competition up front.

A move to Leverkusen would reunite him with former England boss Gareth Southgate, who took charge of the Bundesliga side in May. The club’s pressing style could suit Watkins’ direct running and link-up play.

What comes next?

Aston Villa will wait to see if Leverkusen’s bid meets their valuation before deciding. A fee around £65 million is believed to be the minimum required to trigger talks.

Watkins, who joined Villa from Exeter in 2017, has one year left on his contract. A move now would secure a profit for the club and give him a chance to play in the Champions League.

Bayer Leverkusen’s next step is to finalise their offer and present it to Villa’s hierarchy. The window closes on 1 September, leaving little time for prolonged negotiations.
