Ollie Watkins 'treated poorly' by England and Aston Villa, claims ex-scout

Ollie Watkins has been left frustrated by Aston Villa and England this year after a prolific 21-goal season. The 30-year-old striker sat on the bench for England’s World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina on 10 July, managing just six minutes against Panama across seven games.

What happened to Ollie Watkins?

Watkins starred for Aston Villa with 17 goal contributions in 17 games late in the season. Yet he was benched four straight times for England, despite his club form. Former Villa scout Bryan King told Football Insider: “I think he’s been treated poorly by England and by Villa at times.”

King added: “They were messing him about during January, February, March. All of a sudden, they bring him back in. He was one of the reasons Villa finished in a Champions League spot.”

Why the criticism over Watkins’ treatment?

Watkins became Villa’s all-time Premier League top scorer this season. He has hit at least 10 goals in every Premier League campaign since 2020. Yet King argued the club and England failed to use him properly.

“He needed a game in the World Cup, to be honest. Not a full game. Certainly used more than he was,” King said. The striker’s contract runs until 2028, but Villa face transfer limits after recent exits.

Can Aston Villa afford to sell Watkins?

Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne and Amadou Onana have left or been injured. Villa must replace them under profit-and-sustainability rules. Selling Watkins would make that harder.

The 30-year-old could push for a move if he wants out. That would leave Villa hunting a striker without breaking financial rules-a tough ask in today’s market.

What’s next for Ollie Watkins?

Watkins could join Villa’s 100-goal club next season if he stays. His future hinges on both club needs and his own ambitions. For now, the striker remains a key asset-if used correctly.

Villa’s summer transfer plans will decide whether Watkins stays or goes. His form demands he plays every week, wherever that may be.
