Paolo Banchero’s Coach Sean Sweeney Praises His Work Ethic Ahead of 2026-27 Season

Paolo Banchero’s new coach Sean Sweeney says the fifth-year forward is in prime shape and pushing hard as the Orlando Magic prepare for the 2026-27 season.

Sweeney, hired on June 1, joined Ryen Russillo’s podcast this week to discuss his early relationship with Banchero. The two met in Seattle two weeks ago when Sweeney flew up to work out with the 22-year-old forward. “He’s a smart kid, he’s serious about how he wants to be a great player and a great winner in this league,” Sweeney said. “And he’s in great shape and working his [expletive] off, which is important.”

Sweeney’s comments come after Banchero’s 2025-26 season ended with a small drop-off in production. The Duke product averaged 22.2 points and 8.4 rebounds in 72 regular-season games, down from his 2024-25 totals. Orlando’s new coach insists it’s time for Banchero to step into the No. 1 role and lead the franchise.

“He’s got no choice now,” Sweeney said. “But I think all those guys that you just mentioned: there’s a lot of high-level players on this team that are serious about winning.”

How Sweeney plans to help Banchero

Sweeney stressed that his job is to give Banchero and his teammates clear roles and structure. He called the young core “the main characters in this movie” and framed himself as the supporting player. Orlando brought in assistant coaches Greg Buckner and kept Joe Prunty to help shape the system around Banchero’s strengths.

“We have to do a great job of making sure we communicate clearly what we want them to do,” Sweeney said. “And then play and coach in a style that lends itself to their talents.”

Banchero enters his fifth NBA season with the Magic, now under a new staff led by Sweeney. The team hopes the extra structure and Banchero’s offseason grind translate into a stronger all-around performance in 2026-27.

Sweeney’s visit to Seattle and the podcast interview both point to a coaching staff fully invested in Banchero’s development. With Banchero focused on winning and fitness, Orlando’s rebuild hinges on whether he can reclaim his previous level of dominance.
