Patrick Ewing signs $65M Knicks deal in 1997 to silence free agency doubts

Patrick Ewing silenced New York Knicks free agency doubts on July 2, 1997, when he signed a four-year deal worth $65 to $70 million to remain with the franchise.

Ewing became an unrestricted free agent after the 1996-97 season. Just one day later, he agreed to stay in New York, inking a contract that made him the NBA’s second-highest-paid center behind Shaquille O’Neal. The deal capped months of speculation about whether the Knicks’ longtime star would leave the city.

At a contract-signing event inside Madison Square Garden, Ewing told the crowd, “Now the whole world knows that I’m back.” He vowed to finish his career in New York and urged fans to push for a championship while he was still in uniform. The seven-footer from Kingston, Jamaica, had spent the previous eleven seasons as the Knicks’ unquestioned leader.

The contract capped Ewing’s first stint in New York, where he arrived as the 1985 No. 1 overall pick out of Georgetown. In his rookie season, he averaged 20 points, nine rebounds, and 2.1 blocks to win Rookie of the Year and make his first All-Star team. Over the next decade, Ewing led the Knicks to ten straight playoff berths and two NBA Finals, while averaging 23.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 2.8 blocks per game.

He made ten straight All-Star teams, earned seven All-NBA selections, and finished top five in MVP voting five times. Yet the championship that eluded him in the 1990s became the enduring mark on his legacy. Ewing’s 1997 contract kept him in the hunt for that elusive title.

Injuries soon sidelined Ewing. Over his final three seasons in New York, he averaged 16.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks while missing more games than in his first twelve years combined. The slide forced a trade request after the 1999-00 season. Ewing left the Knicks in February 2000, ending his Hall of Fame run in the orange and blue after fifteen years.

His 1997 contract signing remains one of the most consequential moves in Knicks history. It locked in the franchise cornerstone for another three seasons and reaffirmed Ewing’s commitment to the Garden faithful.
