Patrick Mahomes Faces Uncertainty As Chiefs Miss Playoffs

2026-06-28 · Patrick Mahomes · Player Focus

Patrick Mahomes is set to return to action in Week 1 of the NFL season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ACL. Mahomes' comeback is key to the Kansas City Chiefs' revival next season.

The Chiefs finished the season with a 6-11 record, their worst campaign in the Andy Reid era. Former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum predicts the Chiefs will miss the playoffs due to uncertainty about Mahomes' readiness, a lack of explosiveness at receiver, and questions at corner.

The Chiefs were No. 16 in the league in yards per pass attempt last year. Tannenbaum cited concerns about Rashee Rice's readiness and the loss of two great corners, Jaylen Watson and Trent McDuffie.

Tannenbaum said, "The Kansas City Chiefs will miss the playoffs for a few reasons, starting at quarterback, [there's] some uncertainty about whether Patrick Mahomes will be ready to go from day one." He also mentioned the team's lack of explosiveness at receiver and questions at corner.

The Chiefs had one of their worst campaigns in the Reid era, posting their first losing season since 2012. They also failed to win the AFC West for the first time since 2015.

Dan Graziano believes Mahomes can lift a sub-par roster into a championship-contending one if he regains his pre-injury form. Graziano said, "The question, of course, becomes, is he his old self?" He thinks the Chiefs need Mahomes to be at his best as soon as possible.

Mahomes tallied 3,587 passing yards on 62.7% completion, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions last season, earning a PFSN QB Impact score of 77.0. He ranked No. 17 in the league in QB Impact score.

The Chiefs' offense is pretty much what they had last year, and they need Mahomes to be at his best to make a championship run. With the defense improved, the Chiefs' fate rests on Mahomes' shoulders.

Patrick Mahomes' return to action is highly anticipated, and his performance will be crucial to the Chiefs' success next season. The Chiefs' playoff hopes depend on Mahomes' ability to regain his pre-injury form and lead the team to victory.
