What happened last time?

Littler lifted the Phil Taylor Trophy on 20 July 2025 with an 18-13 comeback against James Wade. He recovered from 5-0 down to seal darts’ most dramatic Matchplay final and claim his first senior major. The 2026 draw pairs the top 16 seeds against 16 ProTour qualifiers in a straight knockout from July 18-26 at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.

Why Phil Taylor’s shadow still looms

Taylor won his first Matchplay in 1995, then added 15 more between 1997 and 2014. His 16 titles remain unmatched, with Littler the only player since Michael van Gerwen in 2015 to retain the crown. The 2026 field includes van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price, Gary Anderson and Luke Humphries, all chasing a slice of Taylor’s legacy.

How the 2026 format works

The Matchplay uses a legs format with escalating targets. First-to-10 in round one, first-to-11 in round two, first-to-16 in the quarters, first-to-17 in the semis and first-to-18 in the final. Sudden death kicks in at 12-12, 13-13, 18-18, 19-19 and 20-20 respectively. The prize purse has risen to £1m, with the champion taking £225,000.

Who’s in the 2026 draw?

Littler opens against Springer, while Humphries meets Cameron Menzies and van Gerwen faces Andrew Gilding. The full first-round slate includes clashes like Gerwyn Price vs Martin Schindler and Gary Anderson vs Ryan Joyce. The women’s field has also been confirmed for the first time alongside the men’s event.
