Quinn Hughes’ next contract could break the Wild’s salary cap: report
The Minnesota Wild face a brutal contract reality after trading for Quinn Hughes in June 2025: his next deal could reset the market for defensemen at $15-20 million annually.
Minnesota acquired Hughes from Vancouver on 18 June 2025, giving up four assets to land the 24-year-old defenseman. Now the Wild must negotiate an extension before his current $7.85 million AAV contract expires after 2025-26. Agents say Hughes’ next deal could push him into NBA-style money, complicating Minnesota’s long-term cap outlook.
A $17 million AAV for Hughes would pair with Kirill Kaprizov’s $17 million to eat up nearly 30% of Minnesota’s 2027-28 salary cap. That leaves little room to build depth around two maxed-out stars. General manager Bill Guerin already signaled creativity by calling New Jersey about Jack Hughes, but the Devils refused to move their franchise center.
Hughes’ camp reportedly prefers a three-year deal, while Minnesota wants a seven- or eight-year extension to lock him down. A shorter pact would let Hughes hit UFA sooner and align his timeline with brother Jack’s, fueling reunion chatter. Guerin’s outreach to New Jersey shows how far the Wild will go to keep Quinn in Minnesota.
One NHL agent called the looming deal “close to NBA comparables,” adding that the top tier of defensemen is now pricing itself like elite forwards. For a small-market team like Minnesota, that math is unsustainable unless Hughes accepts a hometown discount: something his camp has not indicated.
