Remco Evenepoel Launches Road Safety Campaign
Remco Evenepoel, the two-time Olympic champion, is teaming up with the Belgian Post Office to launch a road safety campaign.
On Dec 3, he crashed into an opened door of a Post Office van, suffering multiple fractures.
The accident occurred when the occupant of the parked vehicle inadvertently opened the door into Evenepoel's path.
He broke his right shoulder blade, right hand, and a rib, and underwent successful surgery.
The campaign, called "Remco Reflex," aims to remind drivers to look over their shoulder before opening their vehicle door.
Almost 300 cyclists are injured every year in dooring accidents in Belgium, according to the Belgian Post Office.
The "Remco Reflex" campaign features a sticker bearing Evenepoel's image to be fixed to the vehicle's door window.
Drivers of post vehicles will have another permanent reminder to be vigilant, using the "Dutch Reach" technique.
Remco Evenepoel, 24, was the first cyclist to sweep the road race and time trial at an Olympic Games, winning both in Paris in August.
He also won the Spanish Vuelta in 2022 and finished third in the Tour de France this year.
The initiative will contribute to a better awareness of the dangers on the road, said Evenepoel.
All road users must take each other into account, he added.
The Belgian Post Office will apply the "Remco Reflex" in all its vehicles.
Evenepoel's cycling academy is partnering with the Post Office to launch the campaign.
Remco Evenepoel's accident on Dec 3 was a heavy impact, breaking the frame of his bicycle.
He also suffered torn ligaments, a dislocated collarbone, and bruised lungs in the accident.
The "Remco Reflex" campaign is a step towards reducing the number of dooring accidents.
Remco Evenepoel's involvement will help raise awareness of road safety for cyclists.
The campaign's sticker will serve as a reminder to drivers to check for cyclists before opening their door.
The "Dutch Reach" technique is an effective way to reduce the risk of dooring accidents.
Remco Evenepoel's partnership with the Belgian Post Office is a positive step towards improving road safety.
The "Remco Reflex" campaign will help prevent many accidents and promote a safer environment for cyclists.
