RJ Barrett’s Contract Deadline Looms: Raptors Face Tough Call Before Next Summer

2026-07-14 · RJ Barrett · Club News

**RJ Barrett’s contract is the Toronto Raptors’ biggest financial headache as they prepare for next season.** The 24-year-old forward, who earned nearly **$27.7 million** in 2025-26, enters the final year of his deal with the franchise needing a raise-and the Raptors may not have the cap space to keep him.

The Raptors’ starting five-Immanuel Quickley (**$32.5M**), Barrett (**~$27.7M**), Brandon Ingram (**$38.1M**), Scottie Barnes (**$38.7M**), and Jakob Poeltl (**$19.5M**)-already pushed the team **$9 million over the $164.961 million salary cap** before the Kawhi Leonard trade. Swapping Ingram for Leonard (**$10.3M increase**) made the situation worse.

Barrett isn’t a franchise anchor like Barnes or Leonard, but he’s far from a role player. His production last season earned him a spot between elite stars and fringe starters-a range the Raptors can’t afford to match.

The Denver Nuggets’ struggles with Peyton Watson’s restricted free agency exposed the same cap crunch. After signing Christian Braun to a **$125M, five-year extension**, the Nuggets can’t retain Watson without trading Cameron Johnson’s expiring contract-a move that would signal surrender.

The Raptors face a similar fork in the road: trade Quickley or Poeltl to free up space for Barrett’s raise, or watch him walk after next season.

Barrett’s value is undeniable. He’s not a question mark like Quickley or Poeltl, who sometimes rotate off the bench. But the Raptors’ financial constraints mean they’ll either have to restructure his deal, trade him, or let him leave in free agency.

With the team **$8 million over the luxury tax threshold**, any raise for Barrett could force tougher cuts-including one of the two young guards.

A trade or free-agent departure would leave a hole in the Raptors’ lineup. Barrett’s scoring and defense were key to their playoff push this season. Without him, Toronto’s championship ambitions could stall before they even begin.

The clock is ticking. Webster has until next summer to decide: keep Barrett happy or rebuild around Leonard and Barnes.
