Robert Lewandowski's Chicago Fire debut postponed due to poor air quality

Robert Lewandowski's Chicago Fire debut delayed by hazardous air

Robert Lewandowski’s first match for the Chicago Fire was postponed just hours before kickoff on Friday because of dangerously poor air quality in Illinois. The Polish striker’s introduction to Major League Soccer was called off as smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed the region, forcing the league’s hand.

What happened in Chicago?

The Fire announced the postponement of Lewandowski’s debut on Friday evening, citing “air quality concerns” that violated safety thresholds. The club had planned a full introduction for the 38-year-old Polish striker, who signed with Chicago in February after leaving Barcelona. Fans gathered at Soldier Field expecting to see Lewandowski take the field for the first time, but the match against Nashville SC was scrapped before the scheduled 7:30 p.m. local start.

Why the air quality forced the call

The National Weather Service issued an air quality alert for the Chicago area on Friday, warning of “unhealthy” conditions for sensitive groups. The smoke from Canadian wildfires pushed the Air Quality Index above 200 in parts of Illinois, far beyond the safe range for outdoor sports. MLS followed its protocols and postponed the fixture, leaving Lewandowski and his teammates in limbo.

What comes next for Lewandowski and the Fire

The Fire have not set a new date for Lewandowski’s debut, but the club said it would work with MLS to reschedule “as soon as conditions improve.” Lewandowski, who turns 39 on August 21, remains eligible to play once the air clears. His arrival has drawn global attention to the Fire, who sit 11th in the Eastern Conference with 12 points from 18 matches.
