Rodri Suffers Injury Setback

2026-06-23 · Rodri · Player Focus

Rodri, the Manchester City midfielder, is out with a serious knee injury, possibly for the rest of the season, after suffering the setback during the 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday.

The injury occurred just weeks after Rodri expressed concerns over the amount of football players are being forced to play, suggesting that it could lead to a strike.

Rodri had missed just five games through injury for Manchester City since joining the club in 2019, according to football data website Transfermarkt.

The injury has sparked a debate over the scheduling of football matches, with many calling for a reduction in the number of games played.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibault Courtois agreed with Rodri's sentiments, stating that players need to find a balance between playing and resting.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca also expressed similar concerns, saying that the amount of games played is "too much" and that players are not being protected.

Manchester City could play up to 75 games this season if they reach the final of every competition they're playing in, while Chelsea could play 74.

FIFA's expansion of the Club World Cup to 32 teams has added to the scheduling concerns, with many teams facing a heavy workload.

As of September 24, 2024, Rodri's injury has highlighted the need for change in the football schedule to protect player health.

The debate is likely to continue, with many calling for a reduction in the number of games played to prevent injuries like Rodri's.
