Rodri wins World Cup as Spain captain, cements Ballon d'Or legacy

Rodri’s stock exploded past all previous highs on 13 July 2026 when he hoisted the World Cup aloft as Spain’s captain in New Jersey.

What happened?

Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final to end a 16-year wait for the trophy. Rodri, the Manchester City midfielder, was crowned player of the tournament after steering La Roja through eight games. The victory added a second star to Spain’s shirt and completed a unique quadruple: World Cup, Euros, Champions League and Ballon d’Or. At 30, Rodri becomes only the fourth men’s player to own the World Cup, Euros, Champions League and Ballon d’Or. The haul cements his place among the modern greats and lifts his Ballon d’Or chances. Guillem Balagué, the Spanish football journalist, said: “He is at Ballon d’Or level. This is Rodri’s team.”

The numbers back it up. Rodri topped every major metric: 910 touches, 428 passes in the opposition half, 122 line-breaking passes and 76 in the final third. He also ran the most distance per game of anyone in the competition.

What comes next?

Rodri’s future at Manchester City is uncertain. His contract expires next summer and Real Madrid are circling. José Mourinho, the returning Madrid manager, is desperate for the composure, defensive work and ball control the Spaniard brings. City’s new boss Enzo Maresca is unlikely to sell, but with one year left the situation is fluid.

A second Ballon d’Or is now plausible. Rodri may need more club football to overcome a stacked field. Yet the World Cup crown has already rewritten his legacy: and Spain’s.
