Rohit Sharma ODI return: When will 'RoKo' feature next in international cricket?

2026-07-21 · Rohit Sharma · Player Focus

Rohit Sharma faces another wait for his ODI return as India’s selectors named a new-look squad for the upcoming series without the veteran opener. The Mumbai batter last played a 50-over game in December 2023, leaving fans guessing when he’ll step out again in the blue jersey.

What happened?

India’s selectors announced the ODI squad for the series against Sri Lanka on 15 July 2026, and Rohit Sharma’s name was missing. The squad, led by KL Rahul, features a mix of youngsters and returning players like Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson. Rohit’s last ODI came against South Africa in Paarl on 18 December 2023, where he scored a 52-ball 43 before India won by 106 runs.

Why it matters for Rohit Sharma

The omission ends months of speculation about Rohit’s ODI future. At 39, he’s India’s oldest active batter in the format, and his place hinges on fitness and form. His absence also leaves a gap in the top order, where Gill and Ishan Kishan are expected to fill in. The selectors’ call suggests they’re prioritising a generational shift ahead of the 2027 World Cup.

What comes next?

Rohit could still return for the T20Is against Sri Lanka, where he’s a proven match-winner. But his ODI hopes now depend on his domestic performances and India’s needs. If he’s fit, he’ll likely target the Asia Cup in September 2026, where his experience could prove vital. Until then, the focus shifts to Gill and Kishan to steady the ship in the 50-over format.

The 'RoKo' factor

Virat Kohli, 37, is also yet to play an ODI since December 2023, though he’s expected to return sooner. The duo’s combined absence marks the end of an era for India’s top order. Their potential comebacks will be closely watched, especially as India build for the next World Cup cycle. For now, the selectors are betting on youth-but Rohit’s return isn’t off the table.
