Rory McIlroy admits indifference to two PGA Tour playoff events

Rory McIlroy has openly admitted he doesn’t care about the first two events of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs, calling the current format flawed. The world No. 2 golfer, speaking after a T40 finish at The Open Championship on July 21, 2026, criticized the lack of incentive for top players to compete in the early playoff rounds.

Why does McIlroy feel this way?

McIlroy’s frustration stems from the playoff structure, which resets all 30 players to even par at the Tour Championship. Since he’s already secured a top-30 spot-thanks to his Masters victory-he sees no reason to prioritize the first two events. 'Why would I care about the first two?' he asked reporters at Royal Birkdale. 'I just need to be in the top 30 to have a chance to win a FedEx Cup.'

The Northern Irishman has only played seven PGA Tour events this season, excluding majors. He skipped last year’s FedEx St. Jude Championship and will return this year only because the tour’s new rules require it. His apathy reflects broader dissatisfaction with the playoff system, which critics argue fails to reward consistent season-long performance.

How does the playoff format work?

The FedEx Cup playoffs consist of three events: the FedEx St. Jude Championship (August 13-19, 2026), the BMW Championship, and the Tour Championship. The top 70 players qualify for the opener, with the field narrowing to 50 and then 30. However, the current format-where all 30 players start at even par-removes the advantage for those who performed best during the regular season.

McIlroy, a three-time FedEx Cup winner, believes the system lacks fairness. 'The PGA Tour is in flux,' he said. 'The change where it doesn’t matter where you are in the top 30 going into the Tour Championship… it’s just about making the cut.'

What changes are coming?

The PGA Tour plans to overhaul the playoff format in 2028, introducing seeded match play to create more drama. McIlroy’s comments highlight the tension between player priorities and the tour’s commercial interests. For now, he’ll play the first playoff event but remains indifferent-proving even golf’s biggest stars struggle with the current system.

The FedEx Cup playoffs begin August 13, 2026, at the St. Jude Championship in Memphis.
