Ross Chastain Hit With Costly Penalty Ahead of North Wilkesboro Race

Ross Chastain will serve a pass-thru penalty at the start of Sunday’s Window World 450 at North Wilkesboro Speedway after his No. 1 Trackhouse Racing car failed inspection three times on Saturday.

What happened?

The Cup Series qualifying session for the North Wilkesboro race was canceled due to rain on Saturday night. Under NASCAR’s metric scoring system, poor finishes from Bubba Wallace, Kyle Larson and Chase Briscoe already put them deep in the field. But Chastain’s penalty goes further.

His car failed inspection three times before Saturday’s practice. That means a drive-thru penalty at the race’s start, plus the loss of pit selection and a crew member. It’s the second time in three weeks a Cup driver has faced this penalty after three inspection failures. Michael McDowell took the same penalty at Chicagoland and finished 29th.

Why it matters for Ross Chastain

Chastain entered the North Wilkesboro weekend 20th in points with 401. He trails the playoff cutline by 45 points. The penalty drops him to the rear of the field before the pass-thru, likely putting him two laps down early.

With five races left in the regular season, every point counts. A bad run in North Wilkesboro could push him 60-plus points behind the cutline. That’s a steep climb for a driver who’s usually a top-10 contender.

What’s next for Chastain

He’ll start Sunday’s race at the back, serve the pass-thru penalty, then try to recover. Trackhouse Racing will need a strong finish just to keep playoff hopes alive. The team’s struggles this season have already cost Chastain points.

The penalty adds to a frustrating 2026 campaign. Chastain’s been off his usual pace, and now a technical issue piles on more trouble. His path to the playoffs just got a lot steeper.

How this stacks up in 2026

Chastain’s penalty follows McDowell’s at Chicagoland three weeks ago. Both cases show how costly repeated inspection failures can be. For Chastain, the timing couldn’t be worse.

The Window World 450 starts Sunday at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Chastain’s race begins with a penalty-and a fight back to the lead pack.
