Russell Westbrook Eyes Heat Backup Role If LeBron James Signs Elsewhere

2026-07-13 · Russell Westbrook · Transfer

Russell Westbrook, 37, is poised to sign with the Miami Heat as a backup point guard if LeBron James opts for Cleveland or Philadelphia instead of Miami, according to New York Post reporter Stefan Bondy.

On 18 Jun, Stefan Bondy reported that the Miami Heat view Russell Westbrook as their primary backup plan if they fail to sign LeBron James. Westbrook, who averaged 15.2 points in 64 games for the Sacramento Kings last season, remains one of the top available veteran guards. He played 1.5 seasons alongside James with the Lakers, where the team won just 33 games in 2021-22.

Westbrook’s value now lies in his experience and ability to create offense off the bench. After averaging 13.3 points and 6.1 assists with the Nuggets in 2022-23, and 11.1 points with the Clippers the year before, he’s proven he can still contribute to a contender. Miami’s backcourt depth is thin behind Davion Mitchell and Tim Hardaway Jr., with Dru Smith, Pelle Larsson, and Myron Gardner as the only other options.

The Heat’s projected starting backcourt features Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, Mitchell, and Hardaway Jr. Westbrook would slot in as a veteran stabilizer, likely on a minimum contract like the one he signed with Sacramento last offseason. His presence would add leadership and playmaking depth ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Miami’s frontcourt is strengthened by Bobby Portis, acquired in the Antetokounmpo trade, but their backcourt remains a concern. Westbrook’s ability to handle pressure, drive to the rim, and draw defenders could ease the load on younger guards. He’s not the MVP-caliber player he was in Oklahoma City, but his tenacity and basketball IQ still hold value for a team chasing a title.

Westbrook’s decision hinges entirely on James’ move. If James signs with the Heat, Westbrook will likely explore other options or retire. If James picks Cleveland or Philadelphia, Miami will move quickly to secure him: possibly before free agency officially opens.
