Russell Westbrook’s Miami Heat move blocked if LeBron James returns: report

2026-07-14 · Russell Westbrook · Transfer

Russell Westbrook’s next NBA destination could hinge on one man’s decision. LeBron James’ free-agency choice will determine whether the Miami Heat pursue the veteran point guard, according to league sources cited by Stefan Bondy of the New York Post on 13 July 2026.

Westbrook, 37, is on Miami’s shortlist to bolster its backcourt. But the Heat won’t sign him if James returns to South Beach. The pair shared a disastrous 33-win, 11th-place season with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021-22. Their chemistry never clicked, and the union ended in acrimony.

Westbrook averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds last season with the Sacramento Kings. His 42.7% field-goal mark and 33.8% three-point clip show he’s no longer the explosive All-Star of his MVP days. Still, his relentless motor and veteran savvy could help a Heat team chasing depth.

James is weighing three teams: Miami, Cleveland, and Philadelphia. If he picks the Heat, Westbrook’s path to the franchise vanishes. The Heat’s front office already has a history with James, who led them to the 2014 NBA Finals. Re-signing him would reshape the roster around Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.

Westbrook’s role in Miami would depend on fit. The Heat need perimeter shooting, an area where the nine-time All-Star isn’t a reliable option. His strengths-playmaking, energy, locker-room presence-could offset his shooting liabilities if the team values them over spot-up shooting.

Westbrook’s market is fluid. If James leaves Miami, the Heat could pivot to Westbrook quickly. His contract status and minutes role would shape any deal. For now, the Heat’s front office is waiting on James’ call.

Bondy’s report adds another layer to a chaotic free-agency period. Teams are chasing stars, and Westbrook’s next stop may come down to one superstar’s whim.
