Serena Williams Loses in Wimbledon First Round

2026-06-30 · Serena Williams · Match Report

Serena Williams lost her first singles match in nearly four years on Tuesday, June 30, at Wimbledon, falling to 20-year-old Maya Joint of Australia 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.

The 44-year-old Williams showed flashes of her dominant form, but Joint handled her pace and won more big points.

Williams displayed her powerful serve and heavy groundstrokes, but Joint was able to break her serve in the first set.

Williams' return to singles tennis after four years was highly anticipated, and her loss to Joint marks a tough start to her comeback.

Williams has 98 career victories in singles on the grass of the All England Club, but Joint's win was her first Wimbledon victory in just her second appearance.

Williams will play doubles with her older sister Venus later in the week, after being given wild card invitations by Wimbledon organizers.

Williams' doubles match will be her next appearance on the court, as she looks to bounce back from her singles loss.

The crowd gave Williams a standing ovation as she walked on court before the match started under a closed roof, with several supporters holding up signs with messages like "Welcome Back".

Williams executed a delicate topspin lob winner early on and then cranked out a 121-mile-per-hour ace to hold for 3-3 in the first set.

But Williams also had a costly double-fault which led to the only break of the first set, and Joint took control early in the third set.

A forehand from Williams sailed long on Joint's third match point to conclude the encounter after 2 hours, 22 minutes.

Williams smiled as she walked off the court to loud applause, despite her tough loss.

Williams and Joint had contrasting reactions to the match, with Williams saying "it was really great to be back at Wimbledon" and Joint saying "I don't know what just happened, to be honest".
