Shawn Johnson Spotlights Special Olympics Gymnastics in New Film

2026-06-29 · Shawn Johnson · Player Focus

Shawn Johnson East stars in a new short documentary called SOARING, which focuses on three Special Olympics gymnasts preparing for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games.

The film, presented by RED BARON, follows Paige Trombley, Elizabeth “Liz” Viele, and Jenny Hill as they train for the Games, taking place June 20-26 in Minneapolis.

Shawn Johnson East serves as narrator and mentor in the film, sharing her own experiences as a gymnast.

Johnson East speaks candidly about what gymnastics demands emotionally, not just physically, and connects with the athletes through their shared understanding of the sport.

The documentary lets the athletes be competitors, showing their nervousness, determination, and joy as they prepare for the Games.

Paige, Liz, and Jenny's stories give the film its emotional center, showcasing their resilience and ambition as they work towards their goals.

Shawn Johnson East said, “These athletes don’t just inspire people around them, they inspire me.”

The film is now streaming on YouTube and at redbaron.com/soaring, and is a reminder that the most meaningful sports stories are not about winning, but about the journey and the people involved.

The 2026 Special Olympics USA Games will take place June 20-26 in Minneapolis, with nearly 3,000 athletes from all 50 states competing in 16 Olympic-type sports.

Shawn Johnson East's involvement in the film highlights the importance of supporting athletes with disabilities and promoting inclusion in sports.

The documentary SOARING is a powerful reminder of the impact that sports can have on people's lives, and the importance of perseverance and determination, as shown by Shawn Johnson East and the Special Olympics gymnasts, on 20 June, at the University of Minnesota
