Shubman Gill hails historic Indian women’s win at Lord’s as Tendulkar, Mithali react
Shubman Gill was among the cricketing greats who celebrated India’s women’s team after their historic first win at Lord’s on 12 July 2026.
The visitors beat England by 7 wickets in a tight chase, sealing a 2-1 series victory in the one-off Test.
India’s women chased 273 in 68 overs to win their first Test at Lord’s. The hosts had set 272 to win after India declared on 326/7 in their second innings.
Smriti Mandhana led from the front with 89 off 158 balls. Deepti Sharma took 4/66 as England were bowled out for 203 and 260 across two innings.
Gill, India’s men’s team opener, posted on social media: “This is huge for Indian cricket. The way our women fought shows what we’re capable of too.”
His message came as part of a wider wave of support from senior players. Sachin Tendulkar called it “a proud moment for every Indian.”
England captain Heather Knight admitted her side “didn’t handle pressure well.” India’s coach Amol Muzumdar said: “The belief in this group is unmatched.”
Mithali Raj, India’s former captain, said the win “will inspire a generation of girls to pick up the bat.”
The Test win at Lord’s caps a strong year for Indian women. They face Australia in a limited-overs series next month.
For the men’s side, Gill remains focused on the next home series against New Zealand in August.
