Sifan Hassan Eyes Quadruple at Paris Games
Sifan Hassan is considering a historic quadruple at the Paris Olympics. On Tuesday, the Dutch team announced the athletes selected to represent the Netherlands, including Hassan.
Hassan's coach, Tim Rowberry, told Runner's World that she hasn't finalized her plans yet. The 31-year-old middle- and long-distance standout is eligible for the 1500, 5000, 10000, and marathon.
The cancellation of the 10000 meters at the Fanny Blankers-Koen Games in Hengelo due to heavy winds prevented Hassan from getting the effort level she needed. Rowberry said they are still evaluating if she can safely compete in different combinations.
Hassan is scheduled to compete in the 1500 and 5000 meters at the Sunset Tour in Los Angeles on July 20. She will likely use this race to evaluate her shape before the Olympics.
Hassan has extensive experience in navigating multiple events at global championships. In 2021, she became the first athlete to medal in the 1500, 5000, and 10000 meters at a single Games.
At the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hassan claimed a bronze medal in the 1500, silver in the 5000, and 11th place in the 10000. She also made a seamless transition to the marathon, winning the 2023 London Marathon and the 2023 Chicago Marathon in 2:13:44.
So far this year, Hassan hasn't been as dominant in her performances. After finishing seventh in the 5000 meters at the Prefontaine Classic on May 25, she told reporters she didn't want to be fresh.
If Hassan decides to compete in all four events, she'll face a grueling schedule with just hours to recover between races. Her coach will continue to evaluate her progress before making a final decision.
Hassan's bold approach to racing has earned her a reputation as one of the most fearless athletes in the sport. As she prepares for the Paris Olympics, all eyes will be on her to see if she can make history once again.
The Dutch runner of Ethiopian origin has been training heavily in preparation for the Olympics. Her plans for another tough training buildup this summer have been well-documented.
On July 20, Hassan will take to the track in Los Angeles to compete in the 1500 and 5000 meters. The outcome of this race will give her team a better idea of her shape and readiness for the Olympics.
As the Paris Olympics approach, Sifan Hassan remains focused on her goal of competing in four events. With her eligibility confirmed, the only question now is which events she will choose to pursue.
The world will be watching as Hassan takes on the challenge of a lifetime. With her impressive record and fearless approach to racing, she is sure to make a lasting impression at the Paris Olympics.
