Sifan Hassan to Run Sydney Marathon, Skipping World Championships

2026-06-23 · Sifan Hassan · Player Focus

Sifan Hassan will run the Sydney Marathon on Aug. 31.

This means she is unlikely to compete at the World Track and Field Championships in Tokyo from Sept. 13-21.

Hassan's management team confirmed her participation in the Sydney Marathon.

Her team stated that running in Australia means she will not participate in the World Championships in Tokyo in principle.

Hassan is the Olympic marathon gold medalist and will headline the women's field for Sydney's debut as a World Marathon Major race.

She earned bronze medals in the 5000m and 10,000m at the Paris Olympics before winning the marathon on Aug. 11.

Hassan has raced once since the Paris Games, taking third in the London Marathon on April 27.

Her decision to run the Sydney Marathon would be the first time she misses the biennial worlds since 2013.

Hassan won 5000m and 10,000m gold and 1500m bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.

She became the first person to run the 5000m, 10,000m, and marathon at one Olympics in 40 years.

Hassan's management team left a small chance for her to change her mind, saying she can always decide differently.

The Sydney Marathon is scheduled for Aug. 31, and the World Track and Field Championships in Tokyo are from Sept. 13-21.

Hassan is excited to be part of the Sydney Marathon's first year as a Major, citing Australia's strong athletics nation and passionate fans.

She will face a tough field in Sydney, but her experience and skill make her a top contender.

The World Championships in Tokyo will feature top athletes from around the world, but Hassan's absence will be notable.

Hassan's decision to prioritize the Sydney Marathon over the World Championships is a significant one, and fans will be watching to see how she performs.

The Olympic marathon gold medalist is known for her endurance and speed, and the Sydney Marathon will be a great test of her abilities.
