Stephen Curry Admits Warriors Will Be Out of Creative Ways if LeBron James Doesn't Join

2026-07-09 · Stephen Curry · Player Focus

Stephen Curry admitted the Golden State Warriors will be out of 'creative ways' to get better if LeBron James doesn't join them.

The Warriors entered the offseason hoping to reshape their roster around Curry, but their plans have been complicated by the uncertainty surrounding James' free agency decision.

Curry said the team has to stay patient and will try to stay aggressive in the offseason, knowing they have to put a good team together and hold down the fort until Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody are back.

The Warriors have roughly $34 million left to avoid tax and four spots left to fill, but the top names in the free-agent market have already come off the board, leaving James as the last legitimate superstar available.

If James signs elsewhere, the front office loses its biggest opportunity to reshape the roster around Curry without sacrificing its remaining flexibility, and the team may have to pivot aggressively, with veteran free agents like DeMar DeRozan becoming realistic targets.

The original blueprint involved trading for Anthony Davis to strengthen their pitch to James, but the Wizards have insisted Davis is untouchable and their asking price has made the deal enormously difficult.

The Warriors have yet to formally engage with the Wizards, and without Davis in the picture, James does not view Golden State as a worthwhile destination, leaving the Warriors in a bind.

Every passing day leaves the Warriors with fewer realistic paths towards acquiring James, and Curry's comments reflect the reality of the team's offseason, with the franchise convinced it can somehow find more despite running out of runway.
