Stephen Curry and LeBron James: Warriors blockbuster trade rumors explode
Stephen Curry could soon be sharing a locker room with his greatest rival. LeBron James has told the Los Angeles Lakers he will not return for the 2026-27 season, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania. The four-time MVP is now a free agent. And the Golden State Warriors are the top destination being discussed.
LeBron James informed the Lakers on June 30, 2026, that he is leaving after eight seasons. He won a championship with the franchise in the 2020 NBA bubble. The Lakers now plan to build around Luka Dončić. They have up to €52 million in cap space with James and Marcus Smart expected to exit.
The Warriors have made moves to clear room. Draymond Green declined a $30 million player option. Golden State also traded the injured Jimmy Butler. That created flexibility for a potential LeBron signing. James wants to reunite with Anthony Davis, his 2020 title teammate. The Warriors could field a lineup of Curry, James, Davis and Green.
Stephen Curry will turn 39 during the 2026-27 season. He is entering his 18th NBA year. LeBron James will be 42, starting his 24th season. He is the league’s all-time leader in points, games played and seasons played. A partnership would be historic: two of the greatest players ever, together at last.
Golden State already built a dynasty around Curry, winning four championships in five Finals appearances. Adding LeBron and Davis would create a superteam unlike any before. The rivalry between Curry and James defined the NBA for years: 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Finals. Now they could be teammates. It would shake up the entire league.
LeBron has not signed anywhere yet. Free agency opens soon. The Warriors need to finalize the cap math. But the rumors are real. The King is leaving Los Angeles. Stephen Curry’s Warriors are the frontrunners. If it happens, the NBA will never be the same.
