Steven Gerrard Announces Retirement

Steven Gerrard announced his retirement from professional football on this day in 2016. He was 36 years old at the time.

Gerrard had left LA Galaxy just over a week before his retirement announcement.

He released a statement confirming his decision, expressing gratitude for his time at Liverpool, England, and LA Galaxy.

Gerrard came through Liverpool's academy to become a European champion, winning the Champions League in 2005.

He also won the League Cup and FA Cup with Liverpool, and earned 114 caps for England, featuring in three World Cups and three European Championships.

After retiring, Gerrard returned to Liverpool as a youth-team coach and later managed Rangers, leading them to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021.

He then became Aston Villa manager but was sacked after less than 12 months in charge.

Gerrard is currently the manager of Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq, where he coaches former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

Gerrard's retirement marked the end of an incredible playing career, with numerous titles and individual accolades.

He will always be remembered as a Liverpool and England legend, and his post-playing career has been just as successful, with a promising managerial career ahead of him.
