Taylor Fritz Withdraws from Eastbourne Open

2026-06-25 · Taylor Fritz · Player Focus

Taylor Fritz has withdrawn from the Eastbourne Open. The number one seed made this decision just before his match against Jan Choinski.

Fritz decided to withdraw after a warm-up match, citing concerns about his fitness ahead of Wimbledon. He shared the news via social media, expressing his disappointment.

The American tennis player was looking to make it a quintuple of titles on the Sussex coast but chose not to risk his health. Felix Gill is the lucky loser set to get a bye to the round-of-16.

This withdrawal is significant for Fritz, who has had a tumultuous 2026 season. Early exits and injuries marred his opening few months, but he found success on grass, reaching the final of the Stuttgart Open and Halle Open.

Fritz lost to Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe in those finals. He was set to play a full grass swing, which included defending his Eastbourne title after defeating Jenson Brooksby last year.

With Fritz's withdrawal, the Eastbourne Open is now wide open. Only three seeds remain: Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Ugo Humbert, and Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Jack Draper could lead a charge to glory.

Fritz's priorities lie elsewhere, with a Wimbledon semi-final to defend at SW19. He wants to be 100% fit for the third Grand Slam of the year. The ATP 250 title is up for grabs, and anyone can step up to claim it.

The Eastbourne Open will continue without Fritz, but his absence will be felt. The tournament has given him some of his favorite memories on court, and the support he's received from fans has been incredible.

Fritz's decision to withdraw is a precautionary measure to ensure he's ready for Wimbledon. He's sorry to disappoint the fans and the tournament but hopes to be back on these courts again soon.

The grass swing has been kind to Fritz, suiting his aggressive baseline style and huge serving. He'll look to carry this form into Wimbledon, where he'll face stiff competition.

For now, the focus shifts to the remaining contenders at the Eastbourne Open. Who will step up to claim the title? Only time will tell.
