Thierry Henry blasts FIFA over Folarin Balogun red card U-turn

2026-07-14 · Thierry Henry · Opinion

On 8 July 2026, Thierry Henry, the France legend and FOX Sports pundit, tore into FIFA after the governing body controversially suspended Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban ahead of the 2026 World Cup round of 16. The Monaco striker was shown a straight red card on 29 June during USA’s 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, but FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee later blocked the suspension using Article 27 of their code. Henry branded the decision “not right” and accused FIFA of firing up Belgium ahead of their emphatic 4-1 victory.

Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute for a challenge on Bosnia centre-back Tarik Muharemović. The USMNT’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals hinged on their star striker, but FIFA’s late intervention spared him a ban. The decision sparked outrage, with Henry and Alexi Lalas trading barbs on live TV. Henry argued the red was wrong in the first place, but insisted the process-reversing a match-day call days later-was worse.

Henry’s stance reflects his broader frustration with FIFA’s handling of key decisions. He told FOX Sports: “What FIFA did wasn’t right. It wasn’t a red, but what they did wasn’t right.” His clash with Lalas highlighted a split in punditry: some defended FIFA’s legal leeway under Article 27, while Henry dismissed it as a breach of sporting fairness. The row also reignited debates over Donald Trump’s reported influence in the decision.

Balogun played in the Belgium defeat but failed to score as the USMNT crashed out. Questions now swirl over FIFA’s disciplinary consistency and the precedent set by political interventions. With Gianni Infantino’s ties to Trump under scrutiny, the episode risks overshadowing the tournament’s final stages. Henry’s outburst adds fuel to calls for clearer, timelier officiating rules.

Critics point to Ronaldo’s overturned ban before Euro 2024 as a parallel, but Henry shut down comparisons. “Let’s talk about the Balogun situation,” he snapped. Lalas countered that FIFA followed procedure, but Henry stood firm: “That’s my opinion.” The spat ended with both men dug into their corners, leaving fans to debate who had the stronger case.
