Thomas Müller fires Vancouver Whitecaps past Cavalry FC in CanChamp thriller

Thomas Müller struck as Vancouver Whitecaps FC hammered Cavalry FC 4-1 in the first leg of their 2026 Canadian Championship quarterfinal on Wednesday night at Swangard Stadium.

The Whitecaps, who entered the tournament as defending champions, started fast. Just two minutes after kickoff they forced an own goal to take the lead. Cavalry fought back and equalized in the 45th minute through Daan Klomp. But Vancouver regained the lead for good in the 61st minute when Brian White’s shot was blocked, and Müller pounced on the loose ball to slot home from close range.

Three minutes later Édier Ocampo’s shot was saved, but White was there to head home the rebound. Rayan Elloumi made it 4-1 in the 75th minute after Cavalry coughed up possession. The Whitecaps now carry a commanding three-goal aggregate lead into the second leg at ATCO Field on Monday 13 July.

This was Thomas Müller’s first match of the 2026 Canadian Championship after Vancouver received a bye as defending champions. The German midfielder’s goal extended his club’s domestic dominance-Vancouver have now won the Canadian Championship four years running.

Müller’s strike was his first in the tournament since joining the Whitecaps in 2025. His composure in front of goal underlined why he remains a key piece for Vancouver’s attack.

The second leg heads to Cavalry FC’s ATCO Field on Monday 13 July at 9:30 pm ET. A Whitecaps victory would seal a semi-final spot and a place in the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup. Cavalry must overturn a three-goal deficit to keep their campaign alive.
