T.J. Watt Falls to No. 7 in ESPN Rankings After 7-Sack 2025 Season

T.J. Watt fell to seventh among NFL edge defenders in ESPN’s 2026 rankings, his lowest position in years, after recording just seven sacks in 14 games during the 2025 season. The drop signals growing concern over his physical decline and the massive financial commitment the Steelers made to him.

Watt’s 2025 stats-7 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 19 quarterback hits-were well below his career standard. He previously held the No. 2 spot in ESPN’s edge defender rankings for two straight years. Now, he trails Danielle Hunter, Aidan Hutchinson, Maxx Crosby, Will Anderson Jr., Micah Parsons, and Myles Garrett. An AFC executive told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, "Definitely in decline," noting younger players have surpassed him.

An NFL personnel evaluator linked Watt’s reduced burst and get-off to lingering lower-body injuries. He missed three late-season games in 2025 after a partially collapsed lung from a dry needling incident at the Steelers’ facility. While his motor and big-play instinct remain, the explosive first step that defined his prime appears diminished.

Watt signed a three-year, $123 million extension before the 2025 season, with $108 million guaranteed. His $42 million cap hit begins in 2026. At 32, with a $52 million dead cap hit if released, Pittsburgh has no realistic exit strategy. Restructuring is possible but risky, and the team may need to increase snaps for Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig to compensate.

The Steelers still hope Watt regains his elite form. He’s bounced back from tough stretches before, but this time, the stakes are higher. His ability to rediscover his trademark explosiveness will determine whether he climbs back into the NFL’s top tier-or becomes a cap burden in his final years. The 2026 season is his reset point.
