Tobi Amusan Wins World Record Gold

Tobi Amusan smashed a world record in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds at the World Championships.

She beat Kendra Harrison's 2016 record of 12.20 by 0.8 of a second.

Amusan's world record sent shockwaves through the athletics world, with Jamaican track and field great Usain Bolt tweeting "Wow".

Noah Lyles, the 200m champion and American record holder, also congratulated her on Twitter, saying "12.12 are you kidding me?".

Amusan went on to bag gold in the final, though her initial finishing time of 12.06 was ruled out due to strong wind speeds.

The 25-year-old's win was Nigeria's first gold at such an event, and it was met with joy and congratulations from a state governor and a presidential candidate.

In November 2016, Amusan tweeted "Unknown now but soon I will be unforgettable, I will persist until I succeed".

Some expressed skepticism at the race, which saw numerous competitors run their best times ever, including four-time Olympic gold medalist and BBC commentator Michael Johnson.

Johnson wrote on Twitter that he didn't believe the 100h times were correct, citing the large number of personal bests and national records set.

Amusan told reporters "I could not believe it when I saw it on the screen after the semis. But it was just a matter of time".

The World Championships took place this Sunday, with Amusan's record-breaking performance causing a stir in the athletics world.

And her win has been recognized by many, including Usain Bolt and Noah Lyles, who congratulated her on social media.
