Tom Pidcock tempers GC ambitions after Pogačar's Tour de France dominance
Tom Pidcock has adjusted his Tour de France ambitions after Tadej Pogačar's commanding stage 6 victory. The Briton, now 13th overall, shifts focus to stage wins after a 9:40 deficit to the Slovenian leader.
Pogačar's solo attack on the Tourmalet left Pidcock struggling. The UAE Team Emirates rider's 43km breakaway stunned rivals, including Pidcock, who admitted feeling overwhelmed. 'I wanted to hide away,' he confessed after finishing 13th overall.
Pidcock's Pinarello-Q36.5 team had hoped for a top-10 GC finish. But Pogačar's dominance reshaped the race. With a 2:42 lead over Jonas Vingegaard, the Slovenian's form leaves little room for challengers. Pidcock's 9:40 gap makes a podium nearly impossible.
Pidcock came close on stage 9 but lost out to Mathieu van der Poel. His mechanical issues highlight the slim margins in sprints. 'I'm still in the top-10 fight,' he said, 'but stages are the priority now.'
Pogačar's UAE Team Emirates squad flexed their strength. Adam Yates and Brandon McNulty supported their leader flawlessly. Visma-Lease a Bike, with Vingegaard, looks vulnerable by comparison. Pidcock's team must regroup for the remaining mountains.
