Tyler Reddick admits losing points lead is just part of NASCAR racing

Tyler Reddick has taken the latest points swing in stride after losing his championship lead at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

What happened in Atlanta?

Reddick dropped to second in the standings on 16 Jul 2026 following a tough run at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The two-time Cup Series race winner finished 14th in the Quaker State 400, surrendering the points lead to William Byron. Byron’s fifth-place finish vaulted him into the top spot, while Reddick’s gap narrowed to 28 points.

Why it matters for Tyler Reddick

For Reddick, the swing underscores the volatility of the NASCAR playoff chase. At 30 years old, he’s now 28 points behind Byron with 16 races left in the regular season. His No. 45 Chevrolet team regrouped after a strong run at Nashville Superspeedway the week prior, but Atlanta exposed the thin margins that decide playoff spots.

What comes next for Reddick?

Reddick’s crew chief Jeff Meendering insists the focus stays on consistency. “We’re not chasing points,” Meendering said. “We’re chasing speed and execution.” Next up is the 3M 250 at Daytona International Speedway, where Reddick has two top-10s in his last three starts. A strong run there could swing the points back his way before the playoffs.

Reddick’s reaction? “That’s racing,” he told reporters after the Atlanta race. “You lose a few, you gain a few. We’ll keep grinding.”
