Virgil van Dijk transfer alert: Liverpool urged to act as PSG stance on star clear

Virgil van Dijk faces transfer questions as Liverpool’s defensive crisis deepens

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is under fresh scrutiny over his future at Anfield after former England international Chris Waddle questioned whether he will feature under new manager Andoni Iraola this season.

The Reds shipped 53 goals in the Premier League last term: their worst defensive return in a 38-game campaign. Waddle’s comments came as reports emerged of PSG’s realistic stance on Liverpool target Bradley Barcola, fueling transfer speculation around Van Dijk.

What happened?

Liverpool’s pre-season under Iraola is underway with the Reds set for a US tour against Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds. Off the pitch, only two new signings: Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz: have arrived at Anfield so far. But with the World Cup ending soon, transfer activity could ramp up quickly.

Waddle, speaking to OLBG, praised Iraola’s attacking approach but questioned the squad’s defensive quality. “Are the players good enough? Will he be allowed to bring in new players? Will Virgil van Dijk be playing this season?” he said. “Last year, the real issue was the middle of the defence.”

Why it matters for Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk, 35, has one year left on his contract and has been linked with AC Milan and Turkish clubs. Liverpool have repeatedly denied transfer reports, insisting he remains part of their plans. Yet Waddle’s remarks highlight growing doubts over his role under Iraola’s system.

“He’s not going to get any quicker,” Waddle added. “He’s always read the game well and technically sound. But when you lose that yard of pace, it’s difficult in the Premier League.”

The Reds’ defensive struggles last season: including a 53-goal haul: underscore the pressure on Van Dijk and his partners. Iraola’s preference for an aggressive style may further limit the Dutchman’s game time if Liverpool sign quicker defenders.

PSG’s stance on Barcola adds urgency

PSG are said to be “realistic” over Liverpool’s interest in Barcola, who has two years left on his contract. The French champions would prefer to keep the winger but understand his limited starting role could push him toward a move.

Liverpool have identified Barcola as one of four alternatives to Yoroi Dioma, per reports. His potential arrival would directly impact Van Dijk’s future, as the Reds look to shore up their backline.

What comes next?

Liverpool’s US tour begins soon, offering Iraola his first chance to assess his squad. Transfer windows rarely stay quiet for long: and with Van Dijk’s contract expiring next summer, the clock is ticking.

For now, the club insists Van Dijk remains central to their plans. But if Barcola or another defender arrives, the Dutch captain’s role could shrink further. The coming weeks will decide whether he stays or leaves Anfield.
