Virgil van Dijk urged to extend contract as Liverpool rebuilds

2026-07-10 · Virgil van Dijk · Transfer

Virgil van Dijk was placed at the centre of a contract‑extension plea on 2 July 2026, as Liverpool legend John Barnes told Betfred the club must secure the Dutch centre‑back for another season while new boss Andoni Iraola reshapes the squad.

Barnes argued that retaining senior players is essential after Liverpool lost Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konaté and Andy Robertson this summer. He said, “I’d like to see Virgil’s contract being extended because for Andoni Iraola, he’ll need his senior players.” The comment comes as rumours linked van Dijk with a move to Turkey, which Liverpool sources have denied.

Andoni Iraola, the 44‑year‑old head coach, began pre‑season training at the AXA Training Centre on 3 July. He inspected the squad, including the recent signings Victor Muñoz from Osasuna and Jeremy Jacquet, who arrived in January. Iraola stressed the need to value the players already at Anfield, hinting that van Dijk’s experience will be a benchmark for younger defenders.

Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool in January 2018, has been a mainstay in the back line. With the defensive departures, his leadership could shape the new back‑four. If Liverpool act on Barnes’ suggestion, a one‑year extension would keep the 31‑year‑old in the squad through the 2026‑27 campaign, providing continuity as the club integrates new signings.

Transfer window activity is limited by the ongoing World Cup, which keeps many players focused on the tournament. Liverpool’s board is expected to review contract offers during the pre‑season week, aiming to finalize any extensions before the first friendly on 10 July.

Securing van Dijk could signal Liverpool’s intent to blend experience with youth, especially as Harvey Elliott returns from a loan spell at Aston Villa. Iraola hinted that players like Elliott will get a chance, but a solid defensive foundation anchored by van Dijk may be the first step in rebuilding the squad.

Liverpool supporters took to social media, with many praising Barnes’ call and urging the club to act quickly. Some fans expressed concern over the club’s recent exodus of senior talent, fearing a loss of identity if van Dijk departs.

The defender is expected to train with the squad throughout the pre‑season, and his performance in the upcoming friendlies will likely influence the final contract decision. With the transfer market still quiet, the next few weeks will reveal whether Liverpool can lock down their captain for another year.
