2026-07-10 · Wayde van Niekerk · Player Focus

Wayde van Niekerk is set to return to the track after a two-year injury lockdown. The Olympic and two-time former world 400m champion damaged knee ligaments in October 2017.

Van Niekerk's recovery included time at medical facilities in the United States and Qatar, with several setbacks, including bruising of the knee.

He told the Paris edition of the Diamond League Call Room that there were days when he couldn't walk. Van Niekerk has slowly come back to the track, with his most recent outing a victory in the Free State provincial championships 400m race in Bloemfontein in March.

The Cape Town native has learned to differentiate between "bad pain when I am on the brink of injuring myself and pain where I just need a day or two of rest and recovery". Van Niekerk thanked his coaches for listening to him when he needed rest.

Van Niekerk, who ran the world record of 43.03 seconds when winning 400m gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics, added that his body is feeling good. He has had time to allow his knee to get used to that 'on your marks' feeling.

The coronavirus pandemic has played havoc with the track and field season, but Van Niekerk argued that it was perhaps easier for him to accept the thought of not competing. He has been in a two-year lockdown hibernation vibe anyway with his injury.

Van Niekerk's recent outings have given him a "massive confidence boost to know that I still have my speed". Now he just needs to puzzle everything back together again to run the 400m successfully. Van Niekerk is ready to hit the track again and regain his top form,

with his sights set on upcoming competitions. The Tokyo Olympics were postponed to 2021, but Van Niekerk is focused on his return to the track. He is '100% ready' to compete again and make a strong comeback,

after a long and challenging injury lockdown. Van Niekerk's determination and hard work will be put to the test as he returns to the track and competes against the best athletes in the world,

in the 400m event. His fans are eagerly waiting to see him back in action, and Van Niekerk is ready to deliver a strong performance. The road to recovery has been long, but Van Niekerk is finally back on track,

and ready to take on the challenge. With his speed and determination, Van Niekerk is set to make a strong comeback and regain his position as one of the top athletes in the 400m event
