Yordan Alvarez shut down trade deadline speculation on Monday, insisting his role is to help the Houston Astros chase a playoff spot. The Cuban slugger said he’s been told by the club he won’t be moved ahead of the July 31 deadline. Houston sits 48-54 but trails the AL West lead by just three and a half games.

Alvarez spoke through an interpreter after Houston’s 4-2 loss to the Rangers on Monday. “That’s not really our job,” he said. “Our job is to go out there and play the game that we know how to play. We give every single game the importance it deserves.”

Alvarez is the first Astro in 32 years to hit at least 33 home runs in his first 100 games. He’s also drawn 16 intentional walks-more than 26 teams have issued all season. Manager Joe Espada called his performance “in a different league.”
