Yuki Tsunoda Eyes New Sport After F1 Door Closes

2026-06-30 · Yuki Tsunoda · Player Focus

Yuki Tsunoda will move to a new sport in 2027 if he cannot regain a seat in Formula 1. Tsunoda was dropped by Red Bull at the end of last season after scoring just 32 points across 22 races.

Tsunoda had previously driven for Racing Bulls since 2021, before being promoted to replace Liam Lawson at Red Bull just two races into 2025. Despite being replaced by Isack Hadjar as Max Verstappen's team-mate for 2026, he is currently filling the role of reserve driver at Red Bull.

Tsunoda is backed by Honda, but the Japanese manufacturer suggested in 2025 that they would not stand in his way if a potential deal could be struck with another team. Rumours have emerged that he is of interest to Haas, should the American team decide to replace Esteban Ocon mid-season.

IndyCar has welcomed a series of ex-Formula 1 drivers over the years, with some enjoying more success than others. Marcus Ericsson, for instance, was signed by Chip Ganassi Racing in 2020 and went on to win the Indianapolis 500 in 2022.

A number of driver contracts are due to expire at the end of 2026, which could provide an avenue for Tsunoda to make the switch for 2027. Felix Rosenqvist, this year's Indy 500 winner, is out of contract at Meyer Shank Racing, while Nolan Siegel is expected to leave McLaren's IndyCar entry, Arrow McLaren, at the end of the season.

Tsunoda's experience in Formula 1 could be an asset in IndyCar, where he would face stiff competition from established drivers like Will Power and Kyle Kirkwood. Romain Grosjean, who made the switch to IndyCar in 2021, did not race on ovals during his first season but changed his stance towards the end of the campaign.

The Japanese driver's future in motorsport remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Yuki Tsunoda will not give up on his racing career without a fight. With his skills and experience, he could be a strong contender in IndyCar, should he decide to make the switch.
