Andre Onana loaned out again after Man Utd starting spot loss

Andre Onana has been loaned out once more by Manchester United after slipping behind Altay Bayindir in the pecking order under manager Erik ten Hag.

Onana, who joined United for £47.2 million in 2023, has been dropped to the bench and shipped back out on loan just a year into his stay at Old Trafford.

What happened?

The Cameroon international’s second spell away from Old Trafford was cut short after he lost the battle for the starting jersey to the Turkish international. Bayindir, signed from Fenerbahce last summer, has taken the gloves for the opening fixtures of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.

Sources close to the club confirmed the decision on 19 July 2026, days before United’s first competitive match of the new season. Onana’s loan exit marks the second time in two years he has been farmed out after failing to lock down a first-team role.

Why it matters for Andre Onana

The latest move leaves Onana’s future at United hanging by a thread. His £47.2m price tag now looks steep after two seasons of inconsistent form and repeated loan exits. The Cameroon No 1 has been a regular transfer rumour, with AC Milan and Bayern Munich previously linked in the summer window.

Ten Hag’s trust in Bayindir-who conceded once in his last five games for Fenerbahce-sends a clear signal. Onana’s path back into the first XI now runs through either a January sale or another loan exit before the transfer window shuts.

What comes next?

Onana is expected to join a club in Europe before the 31 August 2026 deadline. The Premier League side will cover a chunk of his wages, easing the move for the player and the new employer. His agent has already held talks with multiple suitors, including Serie A and Bundesliga outfits.

For United, the swap frees up a wage bill and keeps Bayindir as the first-choice keeper. Ten Hag gains a settled backline before the Champions League qualifiers begin in mid-August.

How Onana’s 2025-26 shaped up

Onana played 28 league games last term, conceding 41 goals and keeping 6 clean sheets. His save rate of 68.3% ranked him mid-table among Premier League keepers. The arrival of Bayindir-who posted a 72.5% save rate in Turkey-has tilted the balance firmly in the Turk’s favour.
