Vladimir Kramnik Faces Discipline for Cheating Allegations

Vladimir Kramnik, the Russian former world chess champion, is under review by the International Chess Federation for disciplinary action due to his persistent cheating allegations against Daniel Naroditsky.

The Charlotte Chess Center announced Naroditsky's death on Monday, and the cause of death has not been made public.

Vladimir Kramnik began accusing Naroditsky of cheating in online chess last October and continued to share his suspicions on social media without providing substantial evidence.

Naroditsky denied the cheating allegations and accused Kramnik of trying to ruin his life, with several grandmasters, including Hikaru Nakamura and Nihal Sarin, calling out Kramnik's conduct.

Arkady Dvorkovich, president of the International Chess Federation, referred Kramnik's public statements to the Ethics and Disciplinary Commission for review.

The federation requires substantial evidence to launch a cheating investigation and may sanction a player who makes unfounded accusations based on emotion or insufficient data.

Vladimir Kramnik's anti-cheating crusade started during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many elite players shifting to online chess.

The International Chess Federation previously responded to Kramnik's public spat with players, saying his approach "brings a lot of harm to the chess community" and "could be ruinous for the careers and well-being of certain players".

In 2023, the popular internet chess server Chess.com shut down Kramnik's blog for spreading baseless allegations about "many dozens of players".

Vladimir Kramnik published a list of players on social media with the title "Cheating Tuesdays" that included Czech grandmaster David Navara, who later considered suicide due to Kramnik's public accusations.

Kramnik responded by accusing Navara of defamation, as reported by the Associated Press.

The investigation into Vladimir Kramnik's conduct is ongoing, with the International Chess Federation promising to take "appropriate action" in any case where public harassment or bullying is observed.

Five-time world chess champion Magnus Carlsen called Kramnik's relentless pursuit of Naroditsky "appalling", highlighting the severity of the situation.

During his last livestream, Naroditsky told his online following that Kramnik's cheating claims had taken a toll on him, saying "Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I start doing well, people assume the worst of intentions".
